2024 Presidents Cup Preview

With no golf this past weekend we wanted to take advantage of it and preview the upcoming Presidents Cup. It is set to tee off from September 24-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal. This biennial event pits the United States Team against the International Team in an intense team competition.

Current Teams

United States Team

The U.S. Team, led by captain Jim Furyk, boasts a formidable lineup:

  • Automatic Qualifiers: Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala

  • Captain's Picks: Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman, Max Homa

International Team

Mike Weir's International Team features a diverse group of players:

  • Automatic Qualifiers: Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Adam Scott, Tom Kim, Jason Day, Byeong Hun An

  • Captain's Picks: Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes, Si Woo Kim, Min Woo Lee

LIV Golfers Ineligible

This one is going to hit a nerve with our boy Donnie, but the absence of LIV Golf players continues to be a significant factor in the 2024 Presidents Cup. Players who joined LIV Golf are ineligible for PGA Tour-sanctioned events, including the Presidents Cup. This ruling has affected both teams:

  • U.S. Team: Missing potential players like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau

  • International Team: Absent stars include Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann

This ineligibility has led to a reshaping of both teams, potentially impacting team dynamics and strategies.

Key Players to Watch

  1. Scottie Scheffler: World No. 1 looking to improve on his 0-3-1 record from 2022

  2. Hideki Matsuyama: A veteran presence for the International Team

  3. Max Homa: Coming off a perfect 4-0-0 record in 2022

  4. Tom Kim: Young star who impressed in his 2022 debut

Matchups We Want To See

While specific pairings are yet to be announced, some intriguing potential matchups include:

  • Scottie Scheffler vs. Adam Scott: A battle of experience vs. current dominance

  • Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay vs. Sungjae Im/Tom Kim: A proven U.S. duo against a dynamic Korean pairing

  • Max Homa vs. Corey Conners: Two rising stars in a potential singles showdown

The 2024 Presidents Cup promises to be an exciting event, with the U.S. Team looking to continue their dominance and the International Team aiming for an upset on Canadian soil. With a mix of veterans and newcomers on both sides, golf fans can expect intense competition and memorable moments at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.
