Golf News: 2025 U.S. Open Recap

The Madman Did It

J.J. Spaun just pulled off the most ridiculous walk-off in major championship history, draining a 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Oakmont to win his first major and pocket $4.3 million. The Los Angeles native finished at 1-under 279, becoming the 92nd unique U.S. Open champion after what can only be described as golf's version of a buzzer-beater.

Final Leaderboard That'll Make You Wince

Winner: J.J. Spaun (-1)
T2: Robert MacIntyre (+1)
3rd: Viktor Hovland (+2)
T4: Tyrrell Hatton (+3)
T4: Carlos Ortiz (+3)

The Drama Was Unreal

Sam Burns entered Sunday with the lead and promptly imploded harder than a tech startup in 2023. After leading by two shots early, Burns got hosed by a questionable ruling on the 15th hole where officials denied him relief from standing water—despite literally splashing with every practice swing. The resulting double-bogey killed his major dreams, and he finished T7 at +4.

Meanwhile, Robert MacIntyre mounted the comeback of the century, starting seven shots back and shooting a Sunday 68 to set the clubhouse target. The Scot even applauded Spaun's winning putt like a true gentleman.

Oakmont Was Absolutely Diabolical

This course ate pros for breakfast with a 74.63 first-round scoring average—the highest since 2018's Shinnecock horror show. The rough was so thick players disappeared into it like they were swallowed by quicksand. Patrick Reed managed the tournament's only albatross (just the 4th in U.S. Open history) then promptly triple-bogeyed the 18th because Oakmont giveth and Oakmont taketh away.

A 90-minute rain delay turned the course into a swamp, making every shot a gamble.

That's golf in a nutshell—where the impossible happens just often enough to keep us all coming back for more.
