Scheffler Goes Nuclear: Dallas Native Tears Up Home Turf for Record-Tying Win

Scottie Scheffler just reminded everyone why he's golf's top dog, obliterating the field at the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson with a performance that was less golf tournament and more video game cheat code.

Local Boy Makes Good (Really, Really Good)

The Highland Park native finished at a jaw-dropping 31-under par, cruising to an eight-stroke victory over Erik van Rooyen in his hometown event. His 253 total score tied the lowest 72-hole mark in PGA Tour history, matching Justin Thomas (2017 Sony Open) and Ludvig Åberg (2023 RSM Classic)1. Scheffler actually had the record all to himself before a rare misstep - a bogey on his 71st hole - dropped him back into a tie.

"This tournament means a lot to me," said an emotional Scheffler, who made his PGA Tour debut at this event 11 years ago. Making it even sweeter: Scheffler brought home the trophy a year after missing the tournament while awaiting the birth of his son Bennett.

Wire-to-Wire Domination

Scheffler snatched control early with an opening 10-under 61 and never looked back, becoming the first wire-to-wire Byron Nelson winner since Tom Watson in 1980. His final-round 63 included an eagle on the par-5 ninth that effectively turned Sunday into a victory parade.

Van Rooyen, who fired his own impressive 63 on Sunday, summed it up perfectly: "There's nothing you can do. Scottie was practically flawless, which is kind of what you expect from the world number one".

Notable Performances

While Scheffler stole the show, a few others managed to shine in his shadow:

  • Erik van Rooyen (-23): Locked up second place and a spot in next week's Truist Championship, vaulting from outside the top 125 in FedEx Cup points to just outside the top 50.

  • Sam Stevens (-20): Secured third place with a solid Sunday 64.

  • Jordan Spieth (-19): Dallas's other favorite son fired a closing 62 to finish fourth, his fourth straight top-20 finish as he builds momentum toward the upcoming PGA Championship - the only major missing from his trophy case.

The Big Picture

For Scheffler, this marks his first win of 2025 and the 14th of his PGA Tour career, pocketing $1.782 million from the $9.9 million purse. More importantly, it signals he's hitting peak form as the golf world turns its attention to the year's second major championship.

As fellow Texan Jordan Spieth noted: "What he's doing is inspiring... I mean, it wasn't that long ago I was definitely better than him, and now I'm definitely not right now".

Translation: The rest of the golf world has officially been put on notice. Again.
