2024 Tour Championship Recap: Scheffler's Dominance Seals the Deal

The 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, proved to be an exciting conclusion to the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs.

Scheffler's Stellar Start

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler entered the tournament as the man to beat, starting with a two-shot lead thanks to his position atop the FedExCup standings. He wasted no time in asserting his dominance, opening with a blistering round that extended his lead to a whopping seven strokes. It seemed the tournament might be over before it truly began!

Challengers Emerge

Despite Scheffler's early fireworks, the field refused to roll over:

  • Collin Morikawa mounted a serious charge, consistently applying pressure with his laser-like iron play.

  • Xander Schauffele, a perennial East Lake favourite, lived up to expectations by staying within striking distance throughout the tournament.

  • Rory McIlroy, starting from 4-under, made a valiant effort to chase down the leaders, reminiscent of his 2022 comeback victory.

Saturday Drama

The third round provided some of the most exciting golf of the week:

  • Scheffler's lead shrunk dramatically, creating tension heading into Sunday.

  • Sahith Theegala made a surprise run up the leaderboard and had a shot.

  • Wyndham Clark and Adam Scott both made moves, setting up an intriguing final round.

Sunday Showdown

The final round had it all:

  • Scheffler's lead dwindled to just two shots at one point, injecting serious drama into the proceedings. An eagle on 14 all but sealed the deal for him.

  • Morikawa refused to back down, applying constant pressure with clutch putting.

  • The back nine became a test of nerves as players battled not just for the title, but for the massive prize money.

Scheffler Seals the Deal

In the end, Scottie Scheffler's class shone through. He weathered the storm of challengers and found another gear when it mattered most. With a clutch performance down the stretch, Scheffler secured both the Tour Championship victory and the FedExCup title.

Other Notable Performances

  • Justin Thomas made an early statement with a 66 in the opening round, vaulting up the leaderboard from his last-place starting position.

  • Ludvig Åberg continued his impressive rookie campaign with another strong showing at East Lake. Finishing 16th at -12.

  • Russell Henley had a standout final round, shooting a course-record 62. This incredible score included an eagle on the last hole, which propelled him up the leaderboard. The eagle not only secured the course record but also had substantial financial implications. By moving into a tie for 4th place, Henley earned $4.833 million. Had he only made a birdie on the final hole, he would have finished tied for 6th and earned $1.7 million less. Would have been an expensive miss!

The $100 Million Finale

With a staggering $100 million prize pool on the line, every shot carried massive financial implications. Scheffler's victory earned him a cool $25 million, a fitting reward for his season-long excellence.

This is CRAZY 🤯

Looking Ahead

Scheffler's dominant 2024 campaign, which included six PGA Tour victories and an Olympic gold medal, cements his status as the world's best golfer.

As the sun sets on another FedExCup season, the golfing world already looks forward to what promises to be an exciting 2025. The 2024 Tour Championship provided a fitting end to an incredible season of golf, showcasing the sport's top talents. We are now in to the fall swing, we get a week off and then we are on to the Fortinet Championship.
