PGA Championship 2025: Rory's Hunting Ground, Spieth's Shot at History, and Scheffler's Reign

Golf's glitterati descend on Quail Hollow this week for the 107th PGA Championship, where soggy conditions and heavyweight storylines have set the stage for what promises to be must-see TV. Grab your popcorn, this one's loaded with narratives juicier than the North Carolina fairways after Monday's downpour.
The McIlroy Factor: Home Field Advantage on Steroids
Fresh off completing the career Grand Slam at Augusta last month (it only took him 11 tries!), Rory McIlroy returns to his personal playground looking to stack trophies. The 36-year-old has absolutely owned Quail Hollow, winning FOUR times here and amassing a ridiculous -102 score over 50 career rounds at the course. For perspective, his nearest competitor, Rickie Fowler, sits at -47 through 45 rounds. Talk about a landlord-tenant relationship.
With the career Slam monkey off his back, McIlroy seems primed for a "let it fly" approach at the beefy 7,626-yard par-71 layout. The stats don't lie: Rory's won this tournament twice before (2012, 2014) and he's hunting for major #6. While most players would be intimidated by Quail Hollow's length, McIlroy's carry distance is actually an advantage here.
Scheffler's Statement Week
World #1 Scottie Scheffler rolls in hot after a dominant win at the Byron Nelson, where he matched the PGA Tour scoring record. But strangely, this is Scheffler's first stroke-play appearance at Quail Hollow. His only previous experience here? A forgettable 0-3-1 record at the 2022 Presidents Cup. (Ouch.)
The Charlotte police department has thankfully been briefed about Scheffler's presence, so we hopefully won't see any dramatic traffic stops disrupting his tournament prep. His caddie Ted Scott is confirmed to be by his side all four days, quieting any rumours of another baby-related departure.

The Spieth Slam Watch Continues
Jordan Spieth enters his EIGHTH attempt at completing the career Grand Slam. Currently ranked 46th in the world, Spieth's best PGA Championship finish came as runner-up to Jason Day in 2015, the same year he nabbed his first two major titles. Since then? No PGA Championship finish higher than 29th in five appearances.
"If I could only win one tournament for the rest of my life, I'd pick this one for that reason," Spieth admitted Tuesday. The 40-1 odds might be tempting if you're feeling nostalgic about 2015-era Jordan.
Weather Report: Bring Your Galoshes
The course took a proper soaking on Monday, with officials actually canceling fan attendance for the day. Tuesday's forecast wasn’t much better with a 60% chance of rain. But fear not, weekend warriors - conditions should improve dramatically when the real action starts, with partly sunny skies and temps in the 80s forecast for tournament days.
The rain means Quail Hollow will play every inch of its massive length. Long hitters, prepare your victory speeches accordingly.
Other Contenders to Watch
Xander Schauffele: Defending champ who set a major championship scoring record of 21-under last year. Also runner-up at Quail Hollow in his last two visits.
Bryson DeChambeau: LIV Golf's primary hope following impressive major performances. Has four top-5 finishes in his last five PGA Championships.
Collin Morikawa: Two-time major winner who claimed this tournament in 2020. Looking for his first win of 2025.
Justin Thomas: Won here in 2017 during the course's previous PGA Championship hosting duties.
💰 Poeches Corner
If you're reaching for your wallet, Scheffler (+450) and McIlroy (+500) are the clear favourites, with Bryson (+1200) sitting as the only other player with odds better than +1800.
For you value hunters, Shane Lowry (+4500) has notched four top-8 finishes in his last nine tournaments and ranks seventh in strokes gained on approach. Justin Rose at 80-1 looks juicy too, with three top-5 finishes in his last five Quail Hollow appearances.
Looking for an exotic bet? The odds of a one-shot victory sit at +240, while a playoff finish pays +350. Given that 25 of the last 30 PGA Championships were decided by two strokes or fewer, this might be the smartest play of all.
Tee times kick off Thursday morning. May your bet slips be blessed and your office productivity be minimal.

Courses We Want To Play: Streamsong Resort

Where Mining Land Becomes Golfing Gold
Florida's golf scene typically conjures images of palm-lined fairways and water hazards, but Streamsong Resort-a 16,000-acre reclaimed phosphate mine 90 minutes from Tampa and Orlando-rewrites the rulebook with three world-class courses that rival Scotland’s dunescapes. Designed by golf architecture’s holy trinity (Coore/Crenshaw, Tom Doak, and Gil Hanse), this Central Florida oasis delivers a bucket-list experience without the transatlantic flight.
The Courses: A Trio of Titans
Streamsong Red (Coore/Crenshaw)
Ranked #21 among America’s top public courses, the Red course transforms ancient sand dunes into a strategic marvel. The 16th hole-a 208-yard par 3 with a 72-yard-deep green-demands precision, while waste bunkers and savannah-like terrain keep players on their toes11618.
Streamsong Blue (Tom Doak)
Wider fairways make the Blue course more forgiving off the tee, but don’t be fooled: its contoured greens and the “all-world” 7th hole (a 203-yard par 3 across a strip-mine river) deliver drama. Golf Digest praises its “stimulating holes” and elevation shifts1118.

Streamsong Black (Gil Hanse)
The resort’s boldest offering, this par-73 layout features “The Gauntlet,” a 1.2-acre putting course, and the windmill-marked 9th hole. Opened in 2017, it earned Golf Digest’s “Best New Course” for its scale and creativity34.

Stay & Play: Lodge Life and Après-Golf
The 228-room lodge offers floor-to-ceiling lake views, while the Clubhouse Experience (12 rooms with a private bar and putting green) caters to groups. Post-round, devour USDA Prime steaks at Canyon Lake Steakhouse or unwind with poolside cocktails at Hemy’s813.
Pro Tips for Booking
Resident deals: Florida/Georgia golfers save 10% weekdays year-round and enjoy summer discounts (May–Sept)6.

Event alert: The Summer Classic (Aug 31–Sept 2, 2025) offers two tournament rounds + lodging from $760/person914.

Why It’s Worth the Splurge
Streamsong’s $160M sale to Kemper Sports in 2023 cemented its status as a must-play destination. With three top-30 public courses, it’s a rare inland Florida property where rugged terrain and architectural genius collide-no passport required416. Just pack extra balls: these courses demand your A-game.
