Unsolicited Golf Tips

It's Time for the 2024 Presidents Cup: Where Golf Meets Geopolitics (and Occasionally, Comedy)

Ladies and gentlemen, grab your plaid pants and dust off your most pretentious golf claps – it's time for the 2024 Presidents Cup! This biennial battle of international pride on perfectly manicured greens is set to unfold at the Royal Montreal Golf Club. Where 12 brave Americans will face off against 12 equally brave (but significantly less favoured) Internationals.

The Matchup: David vs. Goliath (If Goliath Had Won 12 Times Already)

Picture this: On one side, we have Team USA, a golfing juggernaut with a 12-1-1 record and a nine-match winning streak. They're so dominant that Vegas oddsmakers have them at -250, which in layman's terms means "bet your house on them, but you'll only win enough for a new garden shed."

On the other side, we have Team International, a plucky band of underdogs from everywhere that isn't Europe or the US. At +260 odds, they're the betting equivalent of finding a four-leaf clover in a sand trap. But hey, miracles happen, right? (Just ask anyone who's ever gotten a hole-in-one or found the TV remote on the first try.)

The Players: A Cast of Characters Worthy of a Wes Anderson Film

Team USA Notables: The All-American Dream Team

  • Scottie Scheffler: World No. 1 and master of the "I'm not nervous, you're nervous" facial expression.

  • Collin Morikawa: Looking for redemption after a winless 2023. Rumour has it he's been practicing by hitting golf balls through the eye of a needle.

  • Russell Henley: The Presidents Cup rookie with a hot streak longer than the line at the clubhouse bar on $2 beer night.

Team International Notables: The Multinational Misfits

  • Adam Scott: Making his 11th appearance, he's been in so many Presidents Cups he's considering running for office.

  • Hideki Matsuyama: Former Masters champion is coming into the weekend in great form.

  • Tom Kim: The 21-year-old wunderkind who's so young, he thinks "Caddyshack" is a new Netflix series.

The Venue: Royal Montreal Golf Club (Where the Rough is Rougher Than a Canadian Winter)

Measuring just over 7,300 yards, this par-70 course is tighter than your uncle's grip on the TV remote during football season. Accuracy is key here, folks. It's not about how far you can hit it, but how well you can avoid turning every hole into an impromptu nature hike.

What to Watch For

  1. The Battle of the Scotts: Will Scottie Scheffler break his team event curse? Will Adam Scott get in the W column? Or will they be left feeling more confused than a snowman in July?

  2. Canadian Fever: With three hometown heroes on Team International, expect the crowd to be louder than a moose during mating season.

  3. The Pressure Cooker: Watch for those crucial putts where players' hands shake more than a leaf in a hurricane. It's in these moments that legends are born (or at least really embarrassing GIFs are made).

Schedule

  • Thursday: 5 Four-Ball matches

  • Friday: 5 Foursomes matches

  • Saturday: 4 Foursomes matches (morning), 4 Four-Ball matches (afternoon)

  • Sunday: 12 Singles matches

Will Team USA continue their reign of terror, or will Team International finally remember how to win? Will the Royal Montreal rough claim more victims than a Stephen King novel?

Tune in this Thursday to find out. And remember, in the Presidents Cup, like in life, it's not whether you win or lose – it's how many times you can say "You da man!" without getting kicked off the course.
