Scheffler's Sensational Comeback
Scheffler, the world No. 1 and reigning Masters champion, poured in five back-nine birdies to edge out Britain's Tommy Fleetwood (-18) for silver and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (-17) for bronze. The 28-year-old Texan set an Olympic record at 19-under par for the tournament.
It caps an incredible season for Scheffler that includes:
2nd Masters victory
7 total PGA Tour wins
World #1 ranking
Rahm's Shocking Collapse
Spain's Jon Rahm looked poised to run away with gold, holding a four-shot lead after 10 holes in the final round. But a shocking back-nine 38, punctuated by a double-bogey on the easy par-5 14th, opened the door for the field. Golf commentator Brandel Chamblee called it "one of the biggest collapses of the year." Rahm finished tied for 5th with Ireland's Rory McIlroy at -15. Defending Olympic champ Xander Schauffele ended up T9.
Frenchman Perez Electrifies Home Crowd
Victor Perez nearly pulled off a miracle finish for the host nation. The Frenchman fired a 63, including four birdies and an eagle in a five-hole stretch, to surge into medal contention. Perez's 16-under total was good for 4th place, just two shots off the podium as he narrowly missed birdie putts on the final two greens. Still, his heroics sent roars echoing across the course and gave French fans a thrill.
No Podium Finish For Kim
Tom Kim shot a final round 3-under 68 at Le Golf National. He was in medal contention after making 4 birdies on the front nine, but a bogey on the 11th and a double bogey on the 18th pushed him down the leaderboard.
Kim needed a podium finish to earn an exemption from South Korea's mandatory military service requirement. He was visibly emotional after the round, consoled on the 18th green by friend and gold medalist Scottie Scheffler.
